Built on standards others already trust.

The standards FaWCOS is built on, and exactly where we stand on each one. We say what is working today and what is not finished yet.

How to read this page.

  • Built and tested2

Working in FaWCOS today, with tests or documents behind it.

  • In progress8

Partly built. What remains is stated in each row.

  • Planned15

Designed, not built yet. We will not describe these as met until they are.

  • Watching5

Moving standards and policies we track before building against them.

Our rule: we say FaWCOS meets a standard only when it is built and tested. Everything else is designed to align or working towards.

Built and tested

Working in FaWCOS today, with tests or documents behind it.

  • NIST SP 800-63 and eIDAS levels of assurance

How confident an identity or record check is

Identity, Land and Activity are each levelled 0 to 3 from field evidence, with tiers from Registered to Audited. The rules are covered by automated tests.

  • FAO Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure (VGGT), ISO 19152 (LADM), STDM

Recording land rights, including customary tenure

Every walked boundary records how the land is held (customary, family, leased, sharecropped, communal and more) and who holds the right.

In progress

Partly built. What remains is stated in each row.

  • Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and GAID 2025

Consent, data subject rights and protection of personal data

Consent records, append-only access logs and protected national ID handling are built. A data protection impact assessment and registration with the NDPC are under way.

  • NIN verification through a licensed provider

    A farmer’s legal identity

Built: lookup, the farmer confirms it is them, and one account per NIN. The raw NIN is never stored on phones. Being switched on for the pilot.

  • W3C Verifiable Credentials 2.0

Portable, signed proof that others can check

Field evidence is already signed on the phone. Issuing attestations as verifiable credentials is being built.

  • FaWCOS Verification Standard v0.1

Our own rules for levels, evidence, audits and governance

Drafted, and the rules engine implements it. To be calibrated with pilot data before version 1.0.

  • EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

Plot location data for commodities exported to the EU

Farm boundaries are walked and measured. An export in the EU due-diligence format and a deforestation cut-off check are planned.

  • UN Transparency Protocol (UNTP)

Digital product passports and traceability credentials

Built on the same credential basis as FaWCOS attestations. A passport per produce lot comes after attestations.

  • CAADP Kampala Declaration (2026 to 2035)

Africa’s agri-food targets for the decade

Verified farmer and land data supports its monitoring. Mapping FaWCOS outputs to its indicators is next.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goals

    Targets 1.4, 2.3, 2.4, 5.a, 8.10, 13.2, 15.1, 16.9 and 17.18

Identity (16.9), land tenure (1.4, 5.a) and verified production (2.3) are captured. A full impact map is being written.

Planned

Designed, not built yet. We will not describe these as met until they are.

  • National Digital Farmers Registry (FMAFS)

    Nigeria’s national farmer identity

Designed to link through a protected NIN reference, subject to agreement with the Registry.

  • DCI Farmer Registry Standards

    Registry data and interoperability

Our data model is close; a published field mapping is next.

  • ISEAL Code of Good Practice

    Credibility of verification systems

Impartiality is built in: organisations cannot clear flags on their own farmers. Independent governance is planned.

  • ISO/IEC 17029 and ISO 19011

    Verification and audit practice

Audit records exist. A written audit procedure and auditor training are planned.

  • IPCC 2006 Guidelines and 2019 Refinement

    How farm emissions are estimated

Capturing the practice detail emission estimates need, such as fertiliser, tillage and residue burning.

  • GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Standard

Land emissions in buyers’ supply chains

Verified parcels provide the traceability it asks for; a supplier-level report is planned.

  • IFRS S2

Climate disclosure by listed companies and banks

A portfolio and supplier emissions report is planned.

  • ISO 14064

    Greenhouse gas calculation and verification

    Report formats will follow it.

  • GS1 identifiers (GLN, GTIN)

Unique codes for farms, sites and produce lots

Farms and parcels have internal identifiers; GS1 codes are planned.

  • GS1 EPCIS 2.0

    Harvest, aggregation and shipment events

Harvests are recorded; an event log in EPCIS form is planned.

  • ISO 22095, ISO 22005 and Codex CXG 60-2006

Chain of custody and food traceability

A custody model per buyer programme is planned.

  • AfCFTA rules of origin and SPS annex

Proving African origin and plant health for trade

Verified farm-level origin exists; an origin evidence pack is planned.

  • AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol

Electronic trade documents and data flows

Open formats are used throughout so records can move across borders.

  • NAQS, SON and NAFDAC requirements

    Nigerian export and quality clearance

Mapping which records each certificate needs.

  • Standards Organisation of Nigeria, then ARSO

Route to a national, then continental, standard

After the pilot, version 1.0 of the Verification Standard will be proposed.

Watching

Moving standards and policies we track before building against them.

  • Verra VM0042 and Gold Standard soil carbon

Carbon credits from improved land management

FaWCOS would supply verified farm data to a project developer. We do not promise farmers carbon income.

  • Paris Agreement Article 6.4

    The UN crediting mechanism

Tracking agriculture methodologies as they are approved.

  • Nigeria National Carbon Market Framework

    National authorisation of carbon credits

Tracking how agricultural data sources will be recognised.

  • GLOBALG.A.P., Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade

    Certification buyers already require

FaWCOS is designed to supply data to these schemes, not to replace them.

  • AU Data Policy Framework and Malabo Convention

    Cross-border data norms in Africa

To be reviewed before any deployment outside Nigeria.

What is already running underneath.

  • Field evidence is signed on the phone and chained, so changes after capture are detectable.
  • A photo counts only after its file reaches the server and matches the fingerprint taken at capture.
  • Levels are computed by fixed rules; nobody types them in.
  • Flags are cleared only by the FaWCOS review team, with written reasons and a full decision history.
  • Banks and insurers receive consented attestations, never raw farmer records.

A note on what this page is not.

This page describes how FaWCOS is designed and built. It is not a certification. No standards body named here has reviewed or endorsed FaWCOS, and the names are used only to say which standard a design follows.
